چکیده

seeds of nine sugar beet lines: five drought tolerant, two susceptible, and two medium tolerant were washed, sterilised, dried, and sown in water agar medium for germination test. seedling growth characters such as cotyledon fresh weight (cfw), cotyledon dry weight (cdw), root fresh weight (rfw), root dry weight (rdw), and root length (rl) were determined after the end of 28 days period of experiment. mannitol was used as osmotic stress inducing substance at 0.0, 0.2, and 0.3m concentrations using a factorial design with three replications and 20 seeds per treatment. relative germination percentage was determined as the germination ratio in the two stresses levels to that of the control (0.0 m mannitol). similarly, relative growth of rl, rfw, and cfw were also determined for sugar beet seedlings. significant differences were found between stress levels for all seedling characters. great genetic variation was found among genotypes for the germination rate and seedling characters except for cdw and rdw. under nonstress condition, relative germination % and relative growth % for tolerant genotypes were greater than those of susceptible genotypes at early growth stage of seedlings. results showed that drought tolerance could be expressed even in the seedling stages of sugar beet plant and may be considered as a criterion for early screening of potentially drought tolerant genotypes.

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

environmental effects of gol-e-gohar iron ore mine on groundwater of the area

gol-e-gohar iron ore mine of sirjan in southern part of iran is a large open pit that operates below the groundwater table and during mining operation, dewatering is required to prevent operation processes from flooding. current operation is going on by digging wells in or out of the pit and pumping to prevent flooding. as a result of the former dewatering operation a vast deep cone of depressi...

Effects ofpollinator line characteristics on quantity and quality of monogerm hybrid seed production in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.)

A two-year experiment was carried out to study the effects of pollinator line characteristicson the quantity and quality of monogerm hybrid seed production in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.)and select proper pollinator for five promising sugar beet cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMSs)during 2012-2013 growing seasons. In this study, four diploid pollinator lines were crossed byfive CMSs of sugar ...

Epigenomics and bolting tolerance in sugar beet genotypes.

In sugar beet (Beta vulgaris altissima), bolting tolerance is an essential agronomic trait reflecting the bolting response of genotypes after vernalization. Genes involved in induction of sugar beet bolting have now been identified, and evidence suggests that epigenetic factors are involved in their control. Indeed, the time course and amplitude of DNA methylation variations in the shoot apical...

Bolting and flowering control in sugar beet: relationships and effects of gibberellin, the bolting gene B and vernalization

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Bolting, the first visible sign of reproductive transition in beets (Beta vulgaris), is controlled by the dominant bolting gene B (B allele), which allows for flowering under long days (LDs, >14 h light) without prior vernalization. The B-locus carries recessive alleles (bb) in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. spp. vulgaris), so that vernalization and LDs are required for boltin...
